Thank you for attending today's introductory meeting for Year 6. If you didn't get the opportunity to join us this afternoon, information can be found in the Letters section of the blog.
Today, Year 6 went on the train to Weston. We walked to the pier, where we had an initial briefing and our lunch. Afterwards, we went to the beach to paint pebbles, build sandcastles and make willow fish. We have been really lucky with the weather and Year 6 behaved brilliantly. Today, Year 6 went to Junior Lifeskills to learn about how to deal with hazards. They had the chance to practise how to contact the emergency services and how to react when encountering an emergency situation.
Our Year 6 Parents' Meeting will take place on 24th September 2014, at 2.40pm.
Until then, this will hopefully be of some use: PE - Swimming is taking place every Monday. Normal PE lessons are timetabled for Fridays this term. Please ensure that you have got the appropriate kit. (This includes suitable footwear for indoor and outdoor PE.) Homework - Currently, only Science homework (which is due every Friday) and Spelling work (test every Monday) is going home. Missing spelling lists can be found in the spelling section of the website. In addition to that, children are being asked to take their Maths assessment sheets home with them, to help them revise and catch up on any gaps they may still have. There will be a 'Big Maths: Beat That' test every Tuesday and a 'Mental Maths' paper every Friday. We are currently in the process of re-structuring the homework at Luckwell, which is why I'm holding back with the tasks given last year. For the moment, homework and tests are therefore as follows: Monday: Spelling test (sheet at home or on website, learn one column per week) Tuesday: Beat That test (sheet to go home after the test) Friday: Science homework is due and will go out again. Mental maths test (sheet to go home afterwards). We will also start to work on grammar and punctuation tasks more frequently. The children will have the opportunity to complete these tasks during their sessions in school. However, should they leave any tasks incomplete, these will have to be done at home. Any work will continue to go into their folder. Unlike last year, they should have their folder in school daily. We have started the year with some artwork...and used this as an opportunity to think about what we want to achieve.
This week, we are looking at WW1 and its effect on the population. Today, we have been trying to answer the question: Why did trench warfare not work? As part of our lesson, we went through a simulation activity, thinking about strategies and how the armies were moving. Afterwards, Year 6 started to write down some thoughts about the life of the soldiers involved in the conflict.
